Why You Look Bigger Sitting Down in Photos and How to Fix It

You sit down for a quick snap and then see the photo later… suddenly your tummy looks bigger, your posture looks slouched, and your arms and legs seem wider than they are. Sitting down is one of the fastest ways to look larger in photos, but it is not your body that changed. It is how the camera sees you when you sink into a seat.

The Fix: Move to the Edge of Your Chair

Instead of sinking back, perch yourself on the edge of the chair. Place your legs slightly closer to the camera at a 45-degree angle. This does three things at once:

  • Elongates your torso by lifting your posture

  • Pulls focus to your legs, which are now the closest point to the lens

  • Slims the rest of your body in comparison, because perspective makes the background areas appear smaller

Try It Yourself

Take two photos:

  1. Sitting back in the chair

  2. Perched on the edge with your legs closer to the camera at a 45-degree angle

The second photo will instantly look taller, slimmer, and more confident.

Bonus Tip

Angle your legs instead of keeping them square to the camera. Diagonals create flow and length, while straight-on lines can make your body look wider.
