How to slim your arms for your headshot photo

My previous blog showed you how to stand in the classic headshot pose. Here, I want to show you the most common mistakes I see women making in that pose, and the quick fix that instantly makes your photos look more polished, more flattering, and more like the “professional headshot” you’re actually going for.

The classic headshot pose (done properly)

The classic headshot pose is simple, but it works for a reason. It gives you shape, it keeps you looking open and confident, and it creates a flattering line through your body.

Here’s the base set up:

1. Angle your body about 45 degrees to the camera

2. Fold your arms (with your fingers on the outside and your thumbs tucked behind)

3. Rotate JUST your shoulders back towards the camera (not your waist)

That third step is the part people skip, and it’s the reason their headshots look off.

When you angle your body and rotate your shoulders back toward the camera, a few really good things happen:

  • Your midsection looks slimmer without you sucking anything in
  • Your shoulders and arms are slimmed
  • Your shoulders and chest open up to the camera
  • You look more confident and approachable

This is one of those small changes that gives a massive result.

The mistake that ruins the pose (and makes you wonder why yours doesn’t look like mine)

Here’s the most common mistake I see when women try the classic headshot pose:

They angle their body, but they don’t rotate their shoulders far enough back toward the camera.

This will photograph your arms completely side on, making the camera photograph them bigger then they actually are. Remember - what is closest to the camera always looks biggest!

How to fix it instantly

If your headshots are looking off, start here:

Angle your body 45 degrees… then rotate your shoulders back toward the camera more than you think you need to.

A good way to check it is to ask yourself:

  • Are my shoulders facing the camera?
  • Or are they still facing the direction my hips are angled?
